The Hundredth Dove Response

A fowler lived in a forest of Old England.  It was he who supplied the great King with all the game bird for the king’s table.  On one summer day the fowler was called up to the king and he was requested to bring a bunch of doves to a marriage feast.  Day in and day out the fowler caught birds, but one kept escaping, one kept running, and one kept mocking the fowler until one day he got it.  “The Hundredth Dove” by Jane Yolen is a remarkable story on how one’s destiny isn’t chosen for him, but he has to choose it himself.
In this staggering story there is great evidence that leads to it being comedic.   Like all comedies it starts out with normality.  The fowler lives his normal life catching birds for his king.  Then a conflict arises and that is that he has to catch 100 birds for the marriage feast of his master.  There is one problem though, every time he catches some doves one escapes.   This bird that escapes is the same one every time as well.  He fully understands his predicament and figures out a solution to his problem.  The solution is to wait and capture the bird himself as that bird was as nimble as a fox.
In this comedic story there are many characters that bring life to the piece.  One of these characters is the fowler Hugh.  Hugh is one of the Kings servants and has pledges for that to always be so.  He is obedient and swift as he manages to do whatever the king requests.  Another important figure is the King himself.  He is the ruler over England and is very demanding, but also is very loving as he treats his bride formally and with respect.
Hugh was a hard worker, but gained nothing from his job.  He was positive his job would be simple, but after he thought very differently about not only his job, but his life.  Yet after words he didn’t continue his job as he left it for nature.  We can all learn from Hugh’s experience that our destiny can be as easily ours as dust in a room.

March of Destruction
The city lies in ashes as I walked out of my house or what was left of it anyways.  This destruction was caused by those Yanks.  There kind was responsible and this all started with one man; William T. Sherman[1]. I still remember the whole thing as if it were yesterday.
It was November 14th and I was on a train headin’ down yonder after I’ve done gone to see my parents.  Them all live up North with them Yanks, but I am fine with that.  Reckon to myself that I shouldn’t mess with my folk’s life.   I was headin’ on back to my little house out in Savannah, Georgia.  The concern has been growing ever since General William Sherman captured Atlanta back in September, but he hasn’t done anything so I figured to forget about it.
About 5 in the evening I arrived back home to my wife how was waiting for me on our couch.  She turned to me, smiled and said “Y’all are back already from Illinois.”
“Sure am,” I responded from the kitchen.  “Have you done got us food from the market?”
“I put them in them cabinets,” she said to me with her beautiful voice.
“Y’all done very good while I was gone,” I stopped what I was saying to think.  “Y’all water them crops?”
“Done.”
“The smelt?  Was it kept up to keep?”
“Sure was Darling.”  She was a very nice wife.  I knew I could leave my house and come back with everything how I left it.  I used to could be able to do all this, but I been traveling yonder and back for months.  Well it was time to sleep as the sun was starting to set.  Them days have been flying in the past few years.  As if time was accelerating.  For all I care is to sleep in peace tonight.  I go to my bead and lay down and drift into a deep sleep.
I wake up the next morning startled as my wife shakes me up and out of bed. Nearly half the day has gone. She has a panicked look on her face as she handed me a letter.  It read as followed…
“Dear residents,
We would like to inform all people living on a south-easterly direction from Atlanta.  This is for that because Atlanta has been destroyed.  General William T. Sherman’s troops have torn the city apart on November 15th and have moved on destroying everything in their path[2].  We have just wanted to alert you of their presence. They have thoroughly destroyed Atlanta, but saved its mere dwelling-houses and churches[3].
Sincerely,
    The Governor of Georgia”
I look up my wife in shock.  It was November 17th already.  He was probably going to get here in a matter of months.  I looked at her and spoke, “Y’all have got to get to your folks.”
“But what about you,” she replied.
“I’ll stay here and get ready.  You head off and I sed a note when this is all over.”
“I’ll miss you.”
“Same here.”  I have never felt so scared in my life.  It was time to prepare for the upcoming attack.  I awoke day after day more nervous than the last.  It was November 25th already.  I hear a knock on the door.  I open it to find a young lad with a piece of parchment.  I take it and he walks away.  This letter reads…
“It has come to my attention after scavenging through Atlanta we have bad news.  Most of the city was destroyed.  Over 4000 building have been burned or torn down[4].  Thousands of lives have been taken. Only about 450 buildings remain[5].  It is heavily advise you leave your homes and the city.”
I should could be able to read the last part about who signed it, but my eyes ain’t the best.  All I know is this is my house and I will stay even if I die.  I stare into the sky and await the incoming mess.  Days and nights have passed over and over.  Every night the panic gets worse knowing that the next day could be my death.  On December 21st I hear screaming in the distance[6].  They are here.
Woman, men and children runs around the town trying to avoid the army.  They march through town and branch off killing everything, destroying everything, and leaving everything in ashes.  I stare out my doorway into the flames and I see the people walk pass.  Out in front I see the man in charge of this part; Cpt. O. M. Poe[7].  He stops turn to one of his man and speaks.  The man pull out a rod looking thing and soon it is ablaze.  He gathers all his might and chucks it.  It lands on my house and starts on fire.  Luckily I have lived near a river.  I take bucket after bucket after bucket of water to put out the fire. I managed to put it out with most of it intact, but by then the troops have passed.  I been scared half to death that night.  It was one I would never forget.  Them Yanks have proved their point, but in a most unnecessary way.  It was to prove out people couldn’t protect us and sadly in this past month; it was true[8].  They even abandoned their supply lines to do this.  The union will pay.  It is night and I decide to sleep on it for now.
I wake up the next morning as the city lies in ashes as I walked out of my house or what was left of it anyways.  This destruction was caused by those Yanks.  There kind was responsible and this all started with one man; William T. Sherman. I will get my revenge.

 Brother to the Wind Analysis
There once was a young goat herder in Africa who has wanted to fly. His grandmother told him that the magical Good Snake will grant his wish, if he finds Good Snake, but his friends were full of disbelief. They humiliated him because they didn’t believe he would find Good Snake and fly. He then went to find Good Snake and show his friends that he can fly. “Brother to the Wind” by Mildred Pitts Walter is a story about how a young boy follows his dreams. He wants to fly as high as a bird and fly as well as a lion can hunt. If you stick to your dreams and goals you will be able to accomplish them in the end.
The character in the story stood up to his dreams in this comedy. Like all comedic stories, this story starts with normalcy. Emeke lives his normal life as an African goat herder. Then the conflict arises; Emeke wants to fly. He wants to fly, but his family was ashamed of him, his friends humiliated him, and no one believed him. Then the conflict is fully realized be Emeke; he has to find Good Snake and show everyone he can fly. He finds Good Snake and makes his wish to fly, but first somethings must be done. He had to gather bamboo poles and bark so he could make a kite like the one on the rock Good Snake gave him. Then the resolution occurs and that is that Emeke was able to finish his kite and fly. Normalcy is regained because he flew and showed everyone then he lived a normal life again.
Within this comedic story there are many interesting characters. Emeke is the main character in this story. He is a goat herder that dreams to fly. He has always stuck to that dream. Good Snake is another character in this story. He is a green snake and he grants wishes. Emeke, of course, wished to fly. Good Snake eventually got everyone’s wishes granted; even Emeke’s.  Another character is Emeke’s grandmother. She is encouraging and loving. She told Emeke about Good Snake and how he can grant wishes.
In addition to these characters come fascinating symbols. One symbol is the kite. It represents flight and how flight can be achieved by not just the bird, but by other creatures as well. Another symbol is Good Snake. He represents the magic in the story because he grants the wishes that the animals and Emeke wish for. A third symbol is the rock Good Snake gave Emeke. It represents guidance and how you should stick to your goals until they’ve been completed.
With these all of these symbols; the story can be whole. When you are chasing a goal just remember to always believe and you shall achieve. Emeke’s friends never believed in him being able to fly, but Emeke showed them all what he can do. If you had a goal that seemed impossible; what would have done? Also if you found Good Snake; what would you have wished for?

Ion

The year was 2081.  "Captain's Report, March 4th, 2081. Five years, five long years. That's how long it took us to get Ion back.  At first it was going well, but then setback after setback, loss after loss, turned what was going to be a quick and decisive win.  Into five years of turmoil."  The captain paces around the brig of his ship when his assistant walks in.
"No need to fret captain," said Haily.
"Fret?  We..we..were able to go into space in the 20th century.  We achieved faster than light speed in the early 21st," says the Captain.  "We achieved so much, only to have it destroyed by these filthy....whatever their called."
"But captain..."
"Haily, we have lost too much already," says the Captain.  "We have lost 4 planets already due to these things.  Olipsion, Delta 5, Altrez, Onyx, their all gone."  The Captain pounds his fist on the table.
"Relax Captain," says Haily. "We will win this war."
"If only it were that easy."

Down on the surface on Ion the battle raged on.  "Team Charlie, repeat, Team Charlie come in!"
"Read you loud and clear Scorpion Team," call back a marine over the radio.
"We request pick up at point 34 hill 2 Section R," shouts Team Scorpion's leader Rex.
"Negative, LZ is too hot," shouts the pilot.  "Clear out the area before the hard drop. Over."
"Argh! Can't trust no one these days," shouts Rex.  "Team, assemble!"
The rest of Scorpion Team come to Rex's position.
"Okay Team, this war ends now," says Rex.  "On the other side of the bluff is U.N.M.C. arsenal."
"But sir," calls a private. "Those things are in between us and the base."
"Not for long, says Rex. "Now I want Blue team to go along right flack and wait for the signal.  Sniper Team, move to hill 3 and wait for clearance.  Alpha Squad come with me.  Now move out!"
"Sir yes Sir," calls the entire group.  The 3 teams take their positions and wait for their orders.  Rex picks up a rock and heaves it at the hostiles.  It hits one in the head and they all look toward Rex's position.  Blue Team starts firing, then the sniper team follows.  Then Rex's squad joins.  Soon the entire enemy hostile group in neutralized.
"Go, go, go," orders Rex.  They move to the doors and wait.  Two guys come along with some C4 and place them on the door.  "Breach positions!  Now!"  They breach the building to find it clear of life.  Rex leaves the squad and heads towards a troop carrier.  "This is the key to this war.  Behind this ship is everything we need. One A-34 Nuclear Device. capable of destroying everything better than a black hole.  Now I want you guy to take this ship and get off this planet."
"Wait sir, this thing is remote activized," calls a marine.
"I am aware of that, but the remote is missing," says Rex.  The marines now understand the situation. "Now Go!"  The marines board the ship.
"Its been an honor Sir," calls a marine.
"Likewise," says Rex.  "Get the package to the Captain."
"Sir," says the marine.
"Also when you get back," says Rex. "Ask for for 117."
"Yes Sir," says the marine.  They take off from the planet.  As they are leaving the atmosphere a blinding light passes by and when it fades. The planets is in cracks and pieces floating into space.
"Rex!," shouts a marine.
"Too late my friend," says another.  "Too late."  They head off back to the ship to find this 117.
