"The Glorious Whitewasher" Review

It was a beautiful Saturday morning and everything was peaceful. A young boy wanted to play, but he had to work. He had to whitewash an entire fence, but he didn’t want to whitewash anything. What if this was you? What would you have done? “The Glorious Whitewasher” by Mark Twain is about who a young boy named Tom who had to whitewash his fence, but of course he didn’t want to. He gets out of his work by making it seem incredible to the other boys, so they would want to whitewash the fence for him. With a little effort you can dodge most problems that are thrown at you.

Because of the problems, this story demonstrates the mode of comedy. The story began with normalcy like all comedy stories do, because it is a normal day for Tom. He goes outside to play, but the conflict arises. The conflict is that he has to whitewash the huge fence in his front yard and of course he doesn’t want to whitewash it. Soon the conflict is fully realized by Tom and he doesn’t what to whitewash the entire fence. Finally the resolution occurs by Tom getting most of the town boys to whitewash the fence for him by making the job seem fun. Then finally normalcy returns because Tom runs out of whitewash, so he can’t make the boys do the chores anymore.

Throughout this comedy, there are many characters that play important roles in the story. Tom is one of the characters. His procrastination is one of his flaws. He is a trickster and a con artist. Also he is as lazy as a dog. Ben is a character in this story too. Ben's imagination is large and he has a short attention span.  This was why he was easily persuaded into Toms whitewashing trick. Jim is in the story too. He procrastinates and he is easily persuaded too. He likes to sing a lot, but he wasn’t tricked into whitewashing like the others, so he is the one not fooled by Tom's tricks.

With these characters come symbols that represent things that they don’t seem to be. The whitewash brush is a symbol in this story because it represents a trade that can get others to do the work for Tom. The marble that Tom had represented freedom for Tom because if Jim takes the marble he will be freed from the job that he has to do. Also the whitewash is a symbol too. It represents the work that had to be done in the time.

Tom proves that most problems can be dodged with a little effort. Although Tom could trick people to do his bidding, fate might not be the same for you.  What we learn from Tom is that with the right words and action you can make anything seem fun.

Welcome to Reach

The Aftermath
Reach has been glassed.  The Covenant have destroyed the planet.  A mountains tip has been divided in two by the glassing. A crashed UNSC Frigate can be seen on a hill to the right. A severely damaged helmet is lying on the smoking ground.

The Prologue
SPARTAN-B312 stares into the visor of the same helmet, before pulling it on.  SPARTAN-B312 is riding in a warthog, on the surface of Reach, towards a UNSC outpost. Two UH-144 Falcons flying in above the Warthog.  Both Falcons land in the camp, and the Warthog pulls to a stop. Noble Six gets out of the Warthog, and moves toward a building.
"Contact with Visegrad Relay was lost last night. All signals flat-lined at twenty-six hundred hours," says Col. Urban Holland over the COM to Carter-A259.  Jun-A266, sitting outside a Falcon's passenger cabin, watches as Noble Six passes by, while placing rounds into a sniper rifle magazine.  "I responded with trooper fire teams, which have since been declared MIA."  Carter is watching a holographic computer screen displaying Holland's portrait and other information."And now you're sending us," says Carter.
"The Office of Naval Intelligence believes deployment of a Spartan team is a gross misallocation of valuable resources," says Holland, "I disagree."  Noble Six reaches the door, and stares at Emile-A239 sharpening his kukri against his shoulder pauldron, and attempts to enter, before being stopped by Catherine-B320.
"Commander," says Catherine.  Carter and Jorge-052 turn to look at Noble Six.
"So that's our new number six," asks Jorge.  Noble Six steps forward.
"Kat, you read his file," asks Emile.
"Only the parts that weren't covered in black ink," says Kat.  Carter turns back to the screen.
"Anyone claim responsibility, sir," asks Carter.
"ONI thinks it might be the local insurrection," says Holland, "Five months ago, they pulled a similar job on Harmony. Hit a relay to take out our eyes and ears, then stole two freighters from dry-dock. That cannot happen here. Reach is too damn important. I want that relay back online, Noble One."
"Sir. Consider it done," says Carter.
"Then I'll see you on the other side," says Holland, "Holland out."  Jorge and Emile stand up. Carter grabs his helmet from the table and turns to face Noble Six.
"Lieutenant," says Carter.
"Commander," replies Six, "Sir."  Jorge and Emile start moving out. Kat joins them by the door.
"I'm Carter, Noble Team's leader," says Carter, "That's Kat, Noble Two, Jun, Noble Three, Emile and Jorge, Four and Five. You're riding with me, Noble Six."  The Spartans exit the building, with Noble Six next to Carter, with Kat, Emile sheathes his knife, and Jorge walking side by side in front of them, towards the Falcon.  "I'm not gonna lie to you, Lieutenant," says Carter, "You're stepping into some shoes the rest of the squad would rather leave unfilled."  The Spartans reach the Falcon and Noble Six and Carter getting into the one where Jun is already waiting.
"Me, I'm just happy to have Noble back up to full strength," says Carter, "Just one thing. I've seen your file. Even the parts the ONI censors didn't want me to. I'm glad to have your skill set, but we're a team. That lone wolf stuff stays behind. Clear?"  Carter signals for the other Falcon to get airborne.
"Got it, sir," says Six.
"Welcome to Reach," says Jun. The Falcons take off and start moving toward a mountain range in the distance.
